Guidelines for Writing and Submitting Successful Proposals

Here are some writing tips and guidelines for drafting your proposal. They have been designed to guide you through the proposal submission process. Kindly keep these guidelines in mind while drafting and submitting your proposal.


Presentation Types and Numbers of Presenters

Presenter numbers in each session varies according to presentation types as follows:

Poster Session: 1-2 presenters

Practice-Oriented Session, or Research-Oriented Session: 1-3 presenters

Workshop: 1-3 presenters

Panel: 3-6 presenters

Note: In the case of multiple presenters, it is important to ensure that all presenters have agreed to present before submitting your proposal.


Guidelines for Session Title, Abstract, and Description

Reviewers will grade all proposals for clarity and overall quality using a Proposal Evaluation Rubric.  Follow these guidelines to enhance your proposal score.

Title Guidelines

  • Your title must not exceed 10 words. (Note: Each part of a slashed or hyphenated word counts as one word.)
  • Write the title with the audience in mind.  Conference attendees will look at your title in the Conference Program Book to decide whether to attend your session.
  • Follow standard capitalization rules:
    • The first letter of verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns must be capitalized.
    • Lower case must be used for conjunctions, articles, and prepositions of fewer than four letters.


Abstract Guidelines

  • Your abstract must not exceed 50 words.
  • The abstract should describe the content of your session as clearly and precisely as possible.
  • Write the abstract with the reviewers in mind. Remember that the proposal reviewers will read and score your abstract, and it will be printed in the Conference Program Book. The TESOL Kuwait Proposals Committee reserves the right to edit abstracts for length and clarity.
  • Write the abstract with the audience in mind.  Conference attendees will look at your abstract in the Conference Program Book to decide whether to attend your session.
  • Do not include names of presenters, institutions, or publications/published works.


Description Guidelines

  • The word count in the session description must not exceed 300 words.
  • Explain what you intend to present during your presentation.
  • Clearly state its purpose with sufficient supporting details and examples.
  • Provide some form of evidence or knowledge of its relevance to current practice or research.
  • Mention any activities, visuals, or other techniques to be employed for engaging the audience.
  • Do not include names of presenters, institutions, or publications/published works.


Session Description Checklist for Proposal Writers

Before you submit your proposal, please review your session description using this handy checklist.

Your session description should :

  • reflect the content of your session.
  • identify the objectives and outcomes of your session.
  • point out the relevant theory, research, and/or practice your session reflects.
  • provide enough details to support your claims.
  • highlight the contributions your session will make to the literature, theory, and/or practice of English language teaching and learning.  
  • mention the type of audience your session  is intended for.
  • clarify the theoretical or practical benefits the audience will take away with them.
  • show your session’s theoretical/practical background and its connection to existing literature on your topic.
  • include enough evidence to support practices, conclusions, and/or recommendations.
  • be well written in terms of organization, style, and grammar.
  • stay within the maximum word count.
